Krog Street Tunnel – Jan 2017

In Atlanta, sitting directly under the CSX Hulsey Train Yard and connecting the Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward neighborhoods to the north with the Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown neighborhoods to the south, the Krog Street Tunnel, aside from its’ role as a thoroughfare, is a conduit for local graffiti artists.

Decorated from stem to stern with some pretty special artwork, this is definitely a cool place to visit. The tunnel itself is over 100 years old, but the artwork keeps it fresh. And there is clearly some great talent used to create this art mosaic.

Tunnel aside; there are some cool neighborhoods in this section of Atlanta. Atlanta is a patchwork of over 200 neighborhoods, each having their own distinctive vibe.

Directly south of the tunnel is Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown, which are largely comprised of small row homes created as a mill town back in 1881 when the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill started operations.

Cabbagetown went into decline when the mill closed in the late 1970’s but saw renewal in the 1990’s when there was a resurgent demand for in-town housing. Today it is an eclectic community of largely artists, musicians and young professionals.

North of the tunnel is the Old Fourth Ward and Inman Park neighborhoods. In direct contrast to Cabbagetown, Inman Park was created around 1880 as an in-town suburb connected to the city by electric streetcars (trolleys).

Today Inman Park is a much-desired community of Victorian mansions as well as some remaining and tiny (by standard) mill town shotgun homes.

By any standard, this whole area is a cool section of Atlanta!
