No jaw dropping mountain vista, fabulous sunsets or rolling surf views here – give me urban decay any day. If Tom Holland, David Byrne and Howard Finster collaborated to create a hiking trail, this is what it might look like.

From Atlanta city proper follow Moreland Drive south through Reynoldstown, East Atlanta and a few other neighborhoods until you get to an industrial area that seems like the least likely place for a wildlife refuge – you’re probably close.

Hidden well away between railroad tracks, an industrial park and the South River, located in Constitution Lakes is a DeKalb County park and wildlife preserve – a great area to visit if you love trees, birding, or just enjoying nature.

But what makes this trail unique is the artwork.

Located adjacent to the South River, the river starts its route not far from here, ultimately joins the Altamaha River and about 400 miles later flushes out into the Atlantic Ocean in Darien, GA. From time to time the South River floods, and when it does it carries all matter of debris with it. Over the course of time people have collected this trash and created a network of art on display along the trails.

All you have to do is follow the “bob’s” to get to the artwork.

There is a great deal of wry humor here – one can never take oneself too seriously, after all. Enjoy this hike with me as we travel along the Doll House Trail!
