Our destiny is clear: Get to Mesa (AZ) in plenty of time to set up and watch the Superbowl, with the New England Patriots facing off against the Atlanta Falcons. This is clearly a game I want both teams to win, being as we spent most of our lives in New England and have lived for the past 20 years just outside of Atlanta. And with a Falcons quarterback that is on fire – and from BC (that’s Boston College)! Still…
The route from Big Bend takes you through Marathon and Marfa, TX, which is a quirky little town situated in the middle of, well, space. Not as quirky as we remembered it, but still a nice stop over. Some interesting sights along the way.
We stopped at one of our favorite spots along the way, which is a “campsite” on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands in or near Bowie, AZ, in a place called Indian Bread Rocks. Aside from being really private (which we really like), it is also beautiful. Perfect, right? A lot of these pictures were taken from our campsite. Last night we just marveled at our great campsite and a beautiful sunset.
Today I decided to go hike up into the foothills of the Dos Cabezas Mountains. The weather is perfect for a hike, maybe high 50’s or low 60’s, dry and sunny. Plus, it is the perfect time of year – no hunters and no rattlesnakes to worry about.
The hike was a little bit over 4 miles (about 1,000 feet elevation gain), with some of it on a rough dirt road, a lot of it on (literally) cow paths, and a bunch of bush whacking up the sides of the hills.
The scenes from this hike were not jaw-dropping, but just continually beautiful in subtle ways. Sounds like code for you are about to be underwhelmed. But really, what a beautiful area.

Sorry, should have said a 26 ft. trailer 🙁 This will be our first time out camping. We are actually renting the trailer for a couple of nights. If we like it we will probably get our own. We have 8 year old triplets and they are super excited to go! Also, thanks for the quick replies 🙂

We didn’t have a campfire, but not because we could not. I am not aware of any burn bans, but there are no fire rings, and the winfs do blow across the area, so some csution would be reconnended. Your 5th wheel will have no problems, as long ad you don’t go too far up the road. The kids will love this area – nice hiking, and a fair number of cattle grazing. By March just be cognizant that snakes may start to apprar – not sure of their calendar. But this is glorious camping!
