White Sands – Mar 2017

This is our second time to see White Sands National Monument in Alamogordo, NM, although it is the first time we were actually able to see it (the first time it was so windy we blew it off – no pun).

White Sands sits in the basin of the Chihuahuan Desert, and abuts the White Sands Missile Range in the basin, sees the Sacramento Mountains to the east, and Organ Mountains to the west.

This is one pretty place to go – just stunning. The sand (it is actually gypsum) is super fine. Sounds like something Rick James would say. She’s a very special girl… Temptations sing.

Anyway, the sand. Gorgeous! And the story about some of the plants and animals that live here are really interesting. Because the sand is so white, many animals have adapted so their skin is very light. Like mine. I would do well here.

The plants also adapt in their own ways and it is really interesting to read about them and then see them in the dunes.

And sunset sets off completely new views. The textures and colors keep changing from minute to minute.

We did visit the White Sands Missile Range – an Army base, in order to visit the museum there. While we were there at the base, I made some inquiries about some ideas that might liven up our July 4th festivities, but they weren’t that impressed with me. I hope someday to regain my Top Secret security clearance, but it may be a while now…
