Concrete Canoe (SC) – June 2015

Go Huskies! Our son Drew and the Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) team participated in the National Concrete Canoe Competition this past weekend. untitled Sponsored by the ASCE (American Association of Civil Engineers), the competition was hosted at Clemson University in Seneca, SC. Michigan Tech’s boat was named Talvi Sielu, which I am told means Winter Soul in Finnish. untitled-2 Qualifying teams from around the country (and world) compete in regional competitions and those that win go on to compete in this national competition. The Michigan Tech team competed and made the school proud by their dedication, skills, participation, teamwork, and performance. untitled-3 untitled-4 untitled-5 untitled-6 untitled-7 untitled-8 untitled-9 untitled-10 untitled-11 untitled-12 untitled-13 untitled-14 untitled-15 untitled-16 Conditions were difficult – temperatures were 100+/- degrees. We brought drinks, watermelon, homemade BBQ and brownies to keep the MTU team nourished, and Karen brought an icy machine; sadly an equipment failure kyboshed the icy’s this year. untitled-17 untitled-18 Drew and the ENTIRE Michigan Tech team are such a fine group of enjoyable young adults – what a pleasure! At the same time, it was sad not to have the late Bill Baxandall (team adviser) with the crew – he will be missed. untitled-19 untitled-20
