We decided to check out the TELLUS Science Museum, up the road in Cartersville, GA yesterday. Pretty cool! Named after the Roman Goddess of Earth, the TELLUS Museum displays four galleries: the Weinman Mineral Gallery, the Fossil Gallery, Science in Motion and My Big Backyard.
The mineral gallery was great! Who knew so many products (including food products!) came in part from minerals! There is a periodic table that helps explain elements and several displays showing minerals and their everyday use. I am sure you will remember that Strontium is used for fireworks, right? Duh.
The science gallery has some really cool stuff, including the Wright Brothers’ 1903 Flyer, a host of early cars and motorcycles, NASA related space gear and a ton more.
The fossil gallery is amazing. There are some badass creatures in there – just sayin’. And it is amazing to see the timeline of the earth, going back almost 5 billion years, and yet humans only evolved maybe 50-60 million years ago. Makes me feel like a young pup!
There is a Planetarium here as well that has various shows – depending on your schedule. And, in the parking lot I found my next tow vehicle! Yes, Karen told me if I save my money I can buy this nice Komatsu 100 ton Dump Truck! Now they make them much bigger (over 300 tons), but I think for my daily driver this one fits the bill.
I would highly recommend this museum as a stop if you are in or going through the Atlanta area – just north and west of the city just off I-75 (exit 293) in Cartersville. To see it fairly, I would plan 2-3 hours to visit the museum.
